The UIHJ, represented by its Secretary-General, Mathieu Chardon, participated in this meeting as an observer member, organised in the premises of the General Directorate of Justice Policy of the Ministry of Justice of Portugal, in Lisbon.
Lilia Jacob, Director General of this Directorate, welcomed the participants. Insisting on the importance of the work on the digitalisation of justice, she wished a fruitful meeting in Lisbon, in view of the 43rd CEPEJ Plenary Meeting on 3 and 4 December 2024 in Strasbourg.
The CEPEJ Working Group on Quality of Justice (CEPEJ-GT-QUAL) is instructed to develop means of analyse and evaluation of the work done inside the courts with a view to improving, in the member states, quality of the public service delivered by the justice system, in particular vis-à-vis the expectations of the justice practitioners and the users, according to criteria of performance and efficiency meeting a large consensus.
The meeting, chaired by Joao Arsenio de Oliveira, Head of Department, International Affairs Department, DG Justice Policy of the Ministry of Justice of Portugal, addressed the various items on the agenda of the meeting. The discussions focused in particular on the work in progress in the following areas:
- Piloting of the Assessment Tool for the operationalisation of the European Ethical Charter on the use of artificial intelligence in judicial Systems and their environment.
- Evaluation of the quality of work of judges.
- Quality of the jurisdictional debate.
- Joint work with other CEPEJ working groups: improving Work-life balance in the judiciary.
- Sustainability within the courts and judicial administration: discussion on the work forward.
- Revision of the satisfaction surveys methodology.
- Facilitating the access to justice for vulnerable people.
- Translation and interpretation in judicial proceedings and court files.
