During his recent mission to the United States, Marc Schmitz, President of the International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ), had the unique opportunity to experience law enforcement in action alongside colleagues from the New York City Sheriff’s Office.

The day was marked by a large-scale operation in the Bronx and Queens, targeting several illegal cannabis shops. These establishments, operating outside of the legal framework, represent a growing challenge for authorities. Witnessing the operation first-hand provided valuable insight into the crucial role that US Sheriff’s play in upholding the rule of law and protecting communities.

Marc Schmitz observed with great interest how the Sheriff Response Team and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, working seamlessly with the NYPD, moved in to secure the locations, confiscate illegal goods and cash, and ultimately close the shops. The operation, carried out with discipline, professionalism, and determination, was a remarkable example of effective inter-agency cooperation.

At the conclusion of the mission, Marc Schmitz expressed his gratitude to Sheriff Anthony Miranda for granting him this unique opportunity. He also warmly thanked Sergeant Rosada and his team, who ensured his safety and provided explanations throughout the entire process.

This exceptional experience highlights the common values shared by enforcement professionals worldwide: a commitment to justice, to the rule of law, and to the service of society. It also reflects the UIHJ’s core mission to foster international cooperation, exchange of best practices, and mutual support among judicial officers across borders.

“An experience I will for sure never forget!!!” declared Marc Schmitz, underlining the deep impression left by this memorable day in New York City.
