The International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ) took part in the second edition of the Michele Taruffo Evidence Week, held in Girona (Spain) from 2 to 6 June 2025. This international academic and legal event, focused on evidential reasoning, brought together scholars, judges, practitioners, and legal professionals from numerous countries to discuss contemporary developments in judicial evidence.
The UIHJ was represented by a delegation of seven members: Marc Schmitz, President of the UIHJ (Belgium); Jos Uitdehaag, First Vice President of the UIHJ (Netherlands); Françoise Andrieux, Honorary President of the UIHJ (France); Carlos Calvo, Deputy Treasurer of the UIHJ (Luxembourg); Duarte Pinto, Member of the Executive Committee of the UEHJ (Portugal); Patrick Gielen, Secretary General of the UIHJ (Belgium); and Luis Ortega, Advisor to the President of the UIHJ (Spain).
The program of the Michele Taruffo Evidence Week was divided into two main parts. During the first three days, the congress featured five plenary lectures on key topics in evidential reasoning, along with two roundtable discussions involving participants from different legal traditions. In parallel, three short training modules addressed specific themes related to evidence. The final two days were dedicated to thematic workshops, organized following an international call for papers. These workshops explored a wide range of topics in the law of evidence, with a comparative and interdisciplinary approach.
The event was conducted in English and Spanish. It provided the UIHJ with the opportunity to showcase practices related to judicial reports and to emphasize the essential role of judicial officers in securing evidence, as independent professionals who ensure the reliability of materials presented before courts. This participation reflects the UIHJ’s commitment to actively contributing to international discussions on the evolution of justice and to promoting the judicial report as a modern, recognized, and effective tool in the administration of evidence.
