The UIHJ, represented by Carlos Calvo, Secretary of the Board, took part in the plenary meeting of the ERA Board of Trustees held in Trier on 13–14 June.
The event opened with a strong and direct message from Dr. Stefanie Hubig, German Federal Minister of Justice, who addressed the growing threats to the rule of law in Europe and the responsibilities of legal institutions. Her words set the tone for two days of focused and constructive discussions.
Participants reviewed ERA’s key achievements over the past year and explored strategic goals for 2026. Topics included adapting training methods to meet the needs of digital-native professionals, strengthening support for EU candidate countries, and defining clear internal guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Environmental responsibility was also on the agenda, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2027.
The meeting was also an opportunity to gather the members of the European Forum of Legal Professions and finalise the programme of the upcoming Brussels conference on 14 November. The event, titled “The Need for Constant Vigilance – The Role of the Legal Professions in Maintaining Democratic Values,” will bring together key players in the legal sector to discuss how to respond to today’s democratic challenges.
Carlos Calvo reaffirmed UIHJ’s commitment to supporting European cooperation between legal professionals. These exchanges help strengthen the impact of the profession and ensure that it stays aligned with the evolving needs of justice across Europe.
