This award comes a few months before the 3rd Africa-Europe meetings of Judicial Officers to be held in Lome on 26 and 27 September 2013.

277 individuals were decorated that same day during the festivities to mark the 53rd Anniversary of the accession of Togo to international sovereignty. Academics, political actors, members of the Judiciary, the civil society and traditional leaders were crowned Officers of the Order of Mono, National Knights of the Order of Merit and of the Order of Academic Palms. This recognition of the Head of State rewards all those who, through their exceptional merits and outstanding service, have greatly contributed to the development of the People and the Nation.

André T. Sama Botcho had the honour of being elevated to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Merit by Mr Katari Follibazi, former Minister of Justice, who gave the following preliminary ritual: "Master André T. Sama Botcho, on behalf of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, and under the powers vested in me, I elevate you to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Merit".

The award preceded the ceremony of re-ignition of the flame of independence and the civil and military parade held on 27 April 2013 on the Boulevard of the New Presidency of Lome II.

This honour is a recognition that reflects on the profession of Judicial Officer in Togo, but also in Africa and around the world. The UIHJ sends its warmest congratulations to the illustrious recipient.
