On 21 and 22 September 2015 the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in the Caribbean (Ohadac) organised in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe an international Conference to present its progress in regional integration.

Ohadac intends to create a regional structure for the so-called “Greater Caribbean”, consisting of 38 territories with various legal status (from Guadeloupe, being a French department, Dutch and British territories to sovereign states). In 2007 ACP Legal initiated Ohadac. Its aim is to establish a unified system for business law and to support the economic development of the region. Ohadac is largely inspired by Ohada who aims the unification of business laws in sub-Saharan Africa.

During the Conference Ohadac announced the establishment of its first institution: the Ohadac Center for Arbitration and Conciliation.

A few months earlier, on 23 June 2015 at a meeting that took place at the head office of the UIHJ in Paris, the UIHJ was invited to discuss a collaboration between UIHJ and Ohadac. On that occasion, Catherine Sargenti, president of ACP Legal also invited UIHJ to participate in the conference.

In Pointe-à-Pitre, the UIHJ was represented by its president, Francoise Andrieux and its secretary, Jos Uitdehaag.

At the conference Françoise Andrieux, President of the UIHJ, presented the Global Code of Enforcement.

The audience confirmed the importance of such standards in the field of enforcement. The presentation was followed with great interest by the audience representing the leading legal institutions and governmental organizations.

In addition to arbitration, company law and general commercial law, enforcement law is one of the main areas Ohadac is focusing on. As such this conference may be considered to starting point of a close cooperation between Ohadac and UIHJ to strengthen enforcement in the various territories covered by Ohadac. The UIHJ is honored to be involved in the legal initiatives.
